Soft Shell Camper Top

One of the best purchases that I’ve made for my Chevy is the Bestop Supertop. I’ve had it installed on my truck since 2014 and it has held up well.  All the materials on this soft shell camper top have proven to be high quality even though spending considerable time outside in the Texas sun.  The best feature is being able to fold it down or take it completely off the truck without 4 people.  One person can handle it with relative ease.  Traveling with an open pick up bed full of stuff can be a bit worrisome when stopping.  Although not as secure as hard shell tops or tonneau covers it does provide peace of mind that the honest people are staying honest.  Ive also been pleasantly surprised that the rain and dust do not find their way in.

I do have a few complaints though. When it is cold you can almost forget about installing it from being folded down. The window panels get stiff and it can be a real pain to get it all zipped up and into position.  I’ve been able to find a work around by using ratchet straps to tug it into place.  The rear corners have never really lined up the way they were intended. And plan on waiting for a sunny day.  Temperature really does affect how the top fits. I also found that having this stowed and folded down against the cab rubbed through some of my paint after a while.  I should have thought if this but it was  convenient  to have it stay on the truck.  At this point I always take it off and just hang it on the wall of my garage.  The brackets clamp on top of the bed rails and this makes sitting on the bed side a pain in the tail.  Seems funny but I found out how often I sat on my bedsides once it hurt.

If I had it to do over again I might look closer at the soft topper. I feel like there are a few features that they have that might make for a better overall unit.  When I was shopping I decided that having windows was important and I still think so.  Its nice to not have to pull up the sides to see what you are doing.

For this kind of thing $800 is alot of money to be sure, but I don’t regret this purchase in the least. Its a far better alternative to having a heavy hardshell topper.
